In the summer of 1817, residents and mariners in Gloucester, Massachusetts, reported numerous sightings of a large, dark sea serpent in the harbor, causing widespread excitement and panic. The Linnaean Society of New England investigated the occurrences and concluded the creature was a new species, named *Scoliophis atlanticus*, after a local resident killed a small snake with a spinal deformity that was believed to be the serpent's offspring. Sightings continued until 1820 before the creature vanished. The specimen was later exposed as a common Eastern racer snake with a deformity, leading to an embarrassment for the Society and subsequent theories from researchers suggesting the sightings may have been humpback whales, drifted narwhals, or a sperm whale. The sea serpent remains a prominent part of Gloucester's local culture and folklore, commemorated today by a bronze statue at the Cape Ann Museum.
